Pilot reported a ‘runaway engine’ on approach & elected to shutdown the engine.  Aircraft hit a telephone pole & then the ground, bursting into flames ½ mile short of R/W 18, Downtown Airport, Mobile, Ala.  Improper installation of the power control linkage on the engine FCU, loss of power lever control.  Pilot failed to follow emergency procedures.
